Luke 14:31-33

31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace. 33 So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.

I believe most people, at least to some degree, relate to God in some matters of their lives like the king with 10,000 men. The battlefields might be issues in our lives that give us anxiety, or perhaps opportunities to gain acclaim for ourselves, or maybe some other area where we want control rather than allow God to have it. We gather up our 10,000 men and foolishly meet with Him who has 20,000.

If anyone has come through a period such as this, they know that the best solution is to send that delegation as early as possible to ask for the conditions of peace. We already know what the conditions are going to be-- complete surrender to Him (v33), which is why we often choose to fight, even to the point of despair first, with our outmatched armies, only to discover (often after much stress) that His way was best all along.
