1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

I often like to take Bible verses and reverse the perspective to either negative or positive, depending on how it is originally stated. Somethimes it speaks louder to me that way. For example, the negative version of this verse would be, "If we confess our sins, He would be unfaithful and unfair if He did not forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." At first that may not sound right, you might think, "God can do whetever He wants, and if He wants to hold our sins against us and leave us in our guilty state (uncleansed), he wouldn't be unfaithful or unfair to do so." But when you think about who it would be unfaithful and unjust to, it makes sense. God the Father made an agreement with His Son Jesus, that He would accept Jesus's sacrifice as payment for all of our sins and that His blood would cleanse all who believe in Him. So how can God now go back on that agreement without being unfaithful and unjust to His Son? He can't, which is what gives us the power to have freedom from our guilt, not because we make up for our sins but because Jesus did.
