Colossians 1:11; 1 Corinthians 3:18-20

Colossians 1
11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy;

"...longsuffering with joy..." That phrase makes me do a doubletake. Does it even make sense? Can we endure suffering while simultaneously experiencing joy? I guess Paul wouldn't have told us to do it if it weren't possible. It helped me understand it better to reverse all the terms and say, "for all instant gratification and indulgence with depression". This phrase seems to contradict itself also, but we can certainly see evidence of it being true in many people. I think this is just another example that shows how the ambitions of men apart from God, even when completely successful, lead to suffering, while the pursuit of godliness, even (especially?) when it is accompanied by suffering, leads to joy.

1 Corinthians 3
18 Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their own craftiness”;[a] 20 and again, “The LORD knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.”[b]
