Luke 14:11

11For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

This verse says that God relates to people in one of two ways. Either way God acts lovingly towards us. We choose which way He relates to us as individuals. If we choose to exalt ourselves, it is in directly in opposition to Him and therefore is the worst thing we could be doing, both for ourselves and those around us. He lovingly humbles us when we do that, to protect us, and to draw us back home where we are safe. When we humble ourselves, He is able to shower us with His blessings, because when we are humble, there is no risk of these blessings puffing us up and making us turn away from Him and into danger.

The word "everyone" indicates that there are no exceptions. So if you think you are humbling yourself but don't think you are seeing results, or maybe you think it is even working against you, don't give up because your God appointed time of exaltation is inevitable.
